Effective April 2, 2026, every practising BC lawyer who is indemnified by LIF has $1 million insurance coverage for claims arising from outside directorship positions. This insurance is arranged and paid for by LIF, and underwritten by Lloyds.
ODL supports lawyers serving as a director, officer, trustee, or governor of a corporation, organization, charity, or trust, but does not include any entity whose shares are publicly traded. Coverage is valuable because many charities and small organizations do not have Directors’ & Officers’ liability insurance.
Subject to the policy terms, ODL covers liability for indemnity and defence costs arising from an error or omission by the lawyer in their outside directorship capacity or by reason of serving in that role. There is no deductible. This insurance is excess to any other Directors’ & Officers’ liability insurance that may be applicable. Coverage is automatic and positions do not need to be reported to LIF.
In the event of an ODL claim, refer to Reporting a Claim. Contact Michael Mulhern, Director of Underwriting & Claims, at mmulhern@lif.ca or 604-697-5869 with any questions.
